Acoustic Dispersion

OK. I didn’t want to make this space too focused on actual “noises”, but here I am with a second sound (ok, really third) post in a row. But, the COCORAHS blog posted a nice video from the Skunk Bear NPR channel about wave dispersion in ice, or Singing Ice.

This is a fantastic explanation of sound dispersion and a really fun clip. Its great when acoustic concepts I deal with almost every day get put out into the world for people to see. Thanks Skunk Bear.

Emphasis on sound isolation

Headphone reviews generally emphasis sound isolation as one of the most important qualities in earbuds and headphones. Take this one for BGR.

If you’re moving around at all — let alone working out — there’s just no way to maintain sound isolation.

I don’t feel the same about headphones. I want the open, non-isolated sound. Maybe I should get some earpods (actually not, they look to ridiculous, and I’m Android). But, that is why I like my SportaPros. I would like a nice set of “open back” earbuds and Bluetooth headphones.

Commute visualization

Very cool visualization of commute timess in Helsinki.

Its like a wave-speed visualization of different wave modes. And, that is what it is. Even includes geographic anisotropy of wave-speed, especially how the highways increase speed.

Aspiration – Kottke

kottkeThe next couple posts will be things that I would like to try to “channel” here on this blog. The first is Kottke. He has the most unique and interesting items highlighted. Generally, they are a link, a quote, and short analysis. I may try to do something similar on occasion. Or, just highlight what I find unique around the web.
